Paper towel commercials make me cry. Three pregnancy tests agree: my fake husband is about to become a very real dad.
Every Tuesday, Soren and I pretend to be married for his grandmother, Edie, whose memory is fading but whose matchmaking isn't. He's a star hockey goalie, so disciplined his team calls him the Monk.
I'm a children's librarian with library cards from eleven states and one rule: no athletes.
Then Edie forgets him on her birthday. I follow him into a blizzard, and we do the sensible thing: negotiate a one-night exception to our rules, expiring at sunrise. We shake on it.
There's no clause for this.
I'm having this baby with or without him. I tell him the only way I know how: I make him a picture book.
He reads it, asks four terrifyingly polite questions, and shows up at seven the next morning with a binder. Forty color-coded tabs, from obstetricians to custody flowcharts. Everything except how he feels.
When morning sickness puts me in the ER, Soren walks out of practice half in his gear. An hour later, he offers me his guest room, in writing, laminated.
Living with him is a problem. He drives to a gas station at 3 AM because I mentioned pickles once. He secretly knits. He shows up for everything.
But I measure people like library books: by whether they come back. Soren always comes back. He just never says he's staying. So is he here for our baby, or for me?
