"I'm pregnant, it's yours, and I'm not asking you for anything." The hockey star doesn't ask if it's his. He asks if she's eaten today.
Wayne has one rule: no kid of his will ever watch the door for a dad who doesn't show up.
Then he spends one night with the wedding baker. Daisy thinks he moves furniture. He lets her.
At 3 AM, she tells him about her bakery. He asks real questions and remembers every answer. He's falling… first, and hard.
By morning, she's gone. Her business card goes through the laundry. He keeps what's left of it anyway.
Daisy was the surprise baby in an unhappy marriage. So when two pink lines appear days before her bakery opens, she makes two promises. This baby will never wonder if it's wanted. And she will never be anyone's obligation.
Then she learns who the father really is: a hockey star playing for an eight-million-dollar contract. He's surrounded by people whose whole job is keeping women like her away.
She gets to him anyway. Wayne writes his number on a diner receipt and makes her call it from the table. He's not losing her twice.
So they make a plan, not a promise. She moves into his condo, still full of boxes he's never unpacked. He learns which crackers settle her stomach. When he thinks she's asleep, he talks to her bump in Swedish.
It's all about the baby. That's what they tell themselves.
But the due date lands right as the playoffs begin. And Daisy has spent her whole life being somebody's accident.
What she wants, what she'll never ask for, is to be somebody's on-purpose.
