The last thing I expected was a hardware store encounter with Eli Cross, an ex-military lumberjack whose storm-gray eyes and mile-high walls make it clear he wants nothing to do with people.

Eli isn't just closed off; he's fortified. Six years alone in a cabin in the woods, working himself to exhaustion, carrying the weight of the men he lost overseas like stones in his chest. Everyone in town knows to leave him be.

But I've never been good at following the rules.
