Nantucket, 1836
Samantha Barnes, daughter of a wealthy shipbuilder from Nantucket, discovers that her father has engaged her to a business rival's son, Hugo, to further his own interests. Samantha flees to her uncle's house in a desperate attempt to keep her freedom and save the Barnes Shipyard from being taken over by Hugo.
At her uncle's home, she meets dashing whaling captain Dare Starbuck, a wealthy man with an excellent reputation and the Devil's own luck on the high seas. The friendship which springs up between them soon grows to overwhelming attraction.
When Sam is nearly kidnapped by Hugo, Dare marries her in order to save her reputation and business. But she's now wed to a stranger, and even worse, he's about to ship out for a two-year voyage, leaving her behind because he doesn't think she can cope with life aboard ship.
Sam risks all by disguising herself as a boy and shipping out as one of Dare's crew-will their journey lead to love?
